Marriage equality comes to DC

Sinjoyla Townsend and Angelisa Young

Today, Washington DC becomes yet another outpost for equality by giving same sex couple’s the right to marry.  The District  joins 5 other states that allow gay marriage as well: Iowa, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut.  Couples lined up early this morning to obtain marriage licenses and Sinjoyla Townsend and Angelisa Young had the lucky distinction to be the first couple registered.

Young said that “It’s like waking up Christmas morning. The marriage bureau was expected to bring in extra employees to help with the number of couples expected to apply for a license.Due to a provision in the law, marriages cannot be held right away. Instead, “three full days must pass between the day of application to the day that the license can be issued.”

So expect full marital bliss in Washington to occur on March 9.

Congratulations to them and everyone else celebrating equality today in our nation’s capital.  Maybe I’m a pessimist, but I fear that the opportunity will not last, given that the bigots who fear justice and equality for all are already scheming to have the right taken away as quickly as they can.  And given the outcomes in CA and ME, they have a pretty good track record.   Personally, this is the closest jurisdiction to where I live that has legalized gay marriage, so Mawm and I are going to take the plunge as soon as possible.  DC Council member David Catania has a great info page on the specifics of marriage in DC here, and a PDF of the application for a marriage license is here.

Oh, and gay marriage and adoption become legal tomorrow as well in Mexico City.  ¡Olé!
